Piston Question
« on: July 19, 2012, 01:19:05 PM »
I'm thinking of putting ALOT of new internals in my ICS Colt M4A1, including the piston. The problem (at least one of them) is that it uses this kind of piston. Do I need to keep this design? Or can I buy a stealth kit or what?

I have been running an ICS M4A1 for almost 6 years now and what you have shown is the low end stock ICS piston.  I ran that in mine for a while and then eventually swapped it out for something a bit more substantial.  I changed the spring to a 110 along with a bore-up piston head, piston, and cylinder and upgraded the spring guide.  I stuck with a metal tooth type piston by choice because it has served me well and I am a firm believer in "stick with what works".

The only change in my lower gearbox I have changed over the years is to rewire the trigger switch because of a Extreme Fire Cheetah MOSFET I installed.

ICS makes a fine durable product.

Could you send me a link of what you got, or something close?

I tend to stick with ICS parts by preference only.  Other parts may work and others may advise differently, it is just my personal choice.

Bore-up Cylinder: http://www.evike.com/product_info.php?products_id=26055

Piston: http://www.evike.com/product_info.php?products_id=26041

Bore-up Piston & Cylinder Head Set: http://www.evike.com/product_info.php?products_id=26053

Spring Guide: http://www.evike.com/product_info.php?products_id=26023

Here is an ICS kit with all the upgraded parts, but it is not a bore-up (This kit can save you some money over ordering all the separate parts plus you get an extra upper housing, tappet plate, and spring.): http://www.evike.com/product_info.php?products_id=29107

I also have installed a 6.03 tightbore barrel to improve distance and accuracy.  The Madbull may be hard to find now, but Bravo has a decent steel barrel as an option.  Just be sure and watch the length (363mm): http://www.evike.com/product_info.php?cPath=24_72_375&products_id=24373

MOSFET (Not a must have to improve the ICS M4, but I sure like the active braking and 3 round burst.)  This does require some rewiring which can be difficult due to limited space in the AEG.  I have my wiring run to the front to the ICS PEQ box that houses my 11.1V LiPo battery, LiPo battery warning chip, and MOSFET.): http://extreme-fire.com/SW-CHEETAH.html

(For now) I don't think I'm going to buy the MOSFET, so buy everything and upgrade the reinforced kit?

I would suggest you purchase and install the kit (Best bang for your hard earned dollars.).  It has all the upgraded bits you'll need to upgrade your M4A1 and improve it's out of the box performance and endurance.  If it is still in your budget a 363mm 6.03 tightbore inner barrel will improve your accuracy.

I only listed the other items per your request as to what I had specifically modified my ICS with.  I have found the bore-up only created other issues and made it more difficult to tweak with higher rated main springs.

I was asking if I should put the bore up in the reinforced, money isn't a problem. and I already have a tight bore barrel

The "reinforced" in the kit description does not mean the upper gearbox body itself is any different than the one that came in your stock ICS M4A1.  All it means is that some of the parts inside (Spring, Spring guide, Piston, Piston & Cylinder Head Set) are an upgrade to the stock components.  With that said all you really need to replace in your current set-up would be those items as I listed them separately in the previous post.

Since the money is not too big of an issue maybe this would be a wise purchase.  I am only saying this because having a backup assembled upper gearbox (I have 3) will keep you in the fight should something break or a different FPS is desired.  They are very easy to swap out in the field or at an event without any tools.  Order the kit plus the bore-up parts (4 Port Cylinder, Piston & Cylinder Head Set, an additional piston, Spring, and Spring Guide) and build two complete upper gearboxes, one an upgraded with the bore-up arrangement and one upgraded with the standard bore components.

If you only want the one upgraded upper gearbox then just order the bore-up components (4 Port Cylinder, Piston & Cylinder Head Set, Piston, Spring, and Spring Guide per the previous post.) and your done.

Because the Phillip head on the screws that are used to assemble the gearbox can get messed up when assembling and disassembling I would order an additional set of those because they are next to impossible to purchase locally: http://www.evike.com/product_info.php?products_id=34818

Here are the stats on each of my three bore-up upper gearboxes:

1.) M110 with .25 BB's: 290-300 FPS

2.) M113 with .25 BB's: 320 FPS

3.) M120 with .20 BB's: 370-375 FPS (Currently in use weekly, but using .25 BB's.)

I use .25 BB's exclusively and have above average distance.

With the bore-up configuration the usual spring rates tend to run lower to get the FPS you desire.
